State Secretary – Evan Moorhead

Evan Moorhead became ALP State Secretary in 2014, having been the Assistant State Secretary from 2012.

Evan was elected to the Queensland Parliament in 2006 as the Member for Waterford, and was reelected in 2009.

Prior to entering politics, Evan was a Research Officer for the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union. Evan graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws.




Assistant State Secretary – Jon Persley

Jon Persley became Assistant State Secretary in 2014.

As a long-term ALP activist, Jon is committed to supporting and strengthening local branches.

Jon has extensive campaign experience, both at a grassroots and central campaign level.

He has previously served as a National Organiser at the ALP National Secretariat, with a particular focus on Queensland. At the 2015 Queensland State Election, Jon served as the ALP’s Target Seat Director.

Jon has worked at all levels of government, including for many years as a key adviser to former Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, Wayne Swan.




Party President – John Battams


As a continuous party member for almost 40 years, John Battams became Party President in 2016, having served as the Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) President from 2011.

Born and raised in Mackay, John has a strong history of trade union leadership in Queensland, combined with an active involvement in the ALP.

John is a former teacher and head of department of secondary schools – having worked with teachers in regional areas and right across the state.

John worked for 5 years as a Queensland Teachers Union (QTU) organiser, and subsequently served for 21 years as QTU General Secretary.
