Dean was elected to State Parliament in November 1986.
He was formerly the Minister for Environment from February 2001 until February 2004.
During the Goss Government he served as Minister for Justice, Attorney-General and Minister for the Arts. He was also Minister for Education from 1998 until February 2001.
Dean was formerly the federal Member for Petrie from 1983 to 1984.
Prior to entering politics, he was a lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Queensland. He holds a Masters Degree and has published several books.
He is involved with many community and sporting organisations in the electorate.
Dean has three children. His interest include family, and when time permits, scuba diving, reading, film and chess.
